Over the last few years I have read many articles about the toxins hidden in fabric conditioners that can increase indoor air pollution as well as irritate the skin, (1) (2) (3) (4). Personally I have never liked the strong fake smell of it, (makes me feel nauseous) and as my mum never used it, neither have I. But now that it is getting warmer, and clothes are being dried outside, I have been reminded of that smell, which has prompted me to share this!
I love to dry my clothes on the line in the sunshine and wind, where they come in smelling fresh (because they really are!) but they can often also dry a bit like card board!
Fear not! There is a super cheap and easy solution, which is safe and non-toxic, and that is distilled white vinegar! Just add 1/4 cup to your softener dispenser and wash as normal. The clothes can come out with a slight whiff of vinegar, but this is completely gone by the time they are dry.
If you like to scent your laundry, then add a few drops of your favourite essential oil to your wash, or to your woollen dryer balls if you use them. Washing will come out with a naturally fresh scent which isn’t overpowering, just really pleasant!
